Further two days of strike action confirmed as dispute at Vista Therm escalates following union-busting response of management

Striking workers at Vista Therm

Elected workplace rep suspended and union members at the factory have been threatened with disciplinary and legal action

Union challenges Managing Director Philip Corrigan to intervene to avoid further escalation

Members of Unite the union employed at Vista Therm, a glass manufacturer based at Silverwood in Craigavon, have been subject to extreme union-busting tactics following last Friday’s one-day strike. The strike followed a unanimous (100%) ballot for industrial action, up to and including strike, which was taken in response to the company’s refusal to engage in pay negotiations. Management claim that they no longer recognise Unite the union despite a collective bargaining agreement existing at the workplace since 2007.

On Friday, representatives of Vista Therm came out to the picket to note the names of workers and police were called out. Since returning to work, union members have been subject to an extreme campaign of union-busting – including the suspension of an elected workplace representative and numerous trade union members being threatened with disciplinary action.

The workforce, which is overwhelmingly Polish speaking, report exclusively English-language warnings being issued questioning their absence from work and management adopting tactics of repeatedly shifting trade unionists around the factory.

Last week, Unite lodged notice of a further two days of strike action on Thursday and Friday coming (20th/21st July). The union warned that the strike action was likely to escalate with a more extensive stoppage in the coming period.

Unite General Secretary Sharon Graham challenged Vista Therm management on their union-busting actions.

Instead of sitting down to resolve this dispute, the response of management to last week’s one-day strike has been to step up their union-busting campaign. A Unite shop steward was suspended yesterday and other Unite members have been subject to threats of disciplinary and legal action. The fact that these measures are being taken against a workforce where few have an extensive comprehension of English or knowledge of their rights is nothing short of despicable.

“Unite does not brook any such attacks on our union, our reps or our members. Management at Vista Therm need to step back from the brink or this strike and our union’s campaigning activities will escalate. These workers deserve respect: they deserve recognition for their trade union and a decent pay increase.”

Vista Therm is part of Lehr Limited Partnership a company registered in Jersey and is a highly successful and profitable business. Sales at Vista Therm have ramped up 31.5% since 2017 reaching £18.3 million in 2021 when the company’s pre-tax profits were £915k. The company Managing Director is Philip Corrigan and Unite Regional Officer Neil Moore made a direct appeal to him to intervene and avoid a further escalation.

Today’s developments are among the worst union-busting and anti-worker activities we have witnessed anywhere in Northern Ireland in years. Not only our union, but the entire union movement, will mobilise in defence of these trade union reps and workers.

“I am calling on Philip Corrigan to intervene personally and avert a further escalation of this dispute. It is simply unacceptable that trade unionists and in particular trade union representatives are subject to such tactics. In the absence of any positive response from management, we will be significantly escalating our strike in the immediate period ahead.

Unite the union notifies Vista Therm of a further two days of strike action in dispute for recognition and improved pay

Vista Therm workers protest during strike action

Strike paralyses production at glass manufacturer with non-union workers joining the picket line

Union calls for employer to sit down and negotiate instead of adopting intimidatory approach to employees

Workers at Vista Therm, a glass manufacturer based at the Silverwood industrial estate in Craigavon took their first day of strike action today. The strike paralysed production at the factory with non-union workers joining Unite members the picket line.

Unite the union has now lodged notice of a further two days of strike action next week – on Thursday and Friday 20th and 21st July and warned workers were likely to further escalate their action in the absence of any engagement by management.

The industrial action follows a unanimous vote for strike action (100%) due to the refusal of management to engage the trade union in pay negotiations. Management have signalled that they no longer recognise the trade union despite a collective bargaining agreement existing within the workplace since 2007. On today’s picket line representatives of the company noted the names of workers on the picket line and police were called out.

Vista Therm is part of Lehr Limited Partnership a campany registered in Jersey and is a highly successful and profitable business. Sales at Vista Therm have ramped up 31.5% since 2017 reaching £18.3 million in 2021 when the company’s pre-tax profits were £915k.

Unite General Secretary Sharon Graham welcomed the strength of the ballot for industrial action.

“Today’s strike action has paralysed production at Vista Therm. The workforce are the secret of the success of this company but have been undervalued by management for years. They are determined to end that situation and to win both recognition of their trade union and a pay increase that offers some protection in the current cost of living crisis.

Management at Vista Therm need to end their anti-union manoeuvres and attempts to intimidate their own employees. All they need to do to end this dispute is recognise our union and engage in pay negotiations that deliver for our members. In the absence of any such engagement, this strike will escalate.

Vista Therm workers vote 100% for strike action for union recognition and a pay increase

Unite the union lodges notice of first planned day of strike action at Craigavon based Glass-manufacturer

Strike follows anti-union manoeuvres from company and will shut down production at site where approximately 150 workers are employed

Unite the union members working at the Vista Therm factory based at the Silverwood industrial estate in Craigavon have returned a unanimous vote for strike action (100%). The union has today lodged notice of a first day of strike action on Friday 14th July with plans for a further escalation in the absence of a positive response from management.

The strike follows a refusal of management at the company to engage in pay negotiations. Management have signalled that they no longer recognise the trade union despite a collective bargaining agreement existing within the workplace since 2007.

“The fact that the ballot for strike action was passed unanimously confirms the strength of feeling among the workers. It is disgraceful that management are attempting to avoid negotiating a pay increase with their own employees by claiming that they no longer recognise a longstanding union recognition agreement.

“It is particularly disgraceful that management at Vista Therm have engaged in anti-union manoeuvres ahead of this ballot closing. Unite will not tolerate such disrespectful behaviour. The workers at Vista Therm deserve an inflation proof pay increase and respect from their employer – they will have Unite’s full support until they win those objectives.”

Firefighters in Waterford and Tipperary to take industrial action tomorrow

Dispute centres on LGMA refusal to engage with Unite members

Over forty Unite members working as retained firefighters in Counties Waterford and Tipperary will take industrial action tomorrow (Friday 7 July).  The dispute follows the ongoing failure of the Local Government Management Association – which represents local authorities – to engage with Unite regarding a number of issues.

Retained firefighters, who form the backbone of the Ireland’s firefighting service, have seen their retainers and call-out fees frozen for a many years, and location requirements make it difficult or impossible for them to supplement their low earnings with other work.  Retained firefighters are also seeking structured and predictable ‘off-call’ times, rather than – as is currently the reality – operating on a 24/7 basis.

Commenting, Unite Regional Officer Eoin Drummey said:

“Unite members working as retained firefighters are committed to serving their communities and are eager to engage with the local authorities – represented by the LGMA – to resolve the issues in dispute.  Those issues range from pay to predictability of working time and inflexible home location requirements.  However, the LGMA refuses to engage with Unite.

Roads Service workers strike in dispute over productivity-based pay system

Workers concerned that productivity unit bonus leaves workers subject to management victimisation and undermines health and safety

Strike action commenced at roads service depots in west yesterday [Monday 3rd July] and due at depots in east from Thursday 6th July

July 4th: Roads Service workers in Unite the union have recommenced strike action in their industrial campaign to end pay being subject to manager’s discretion.

Like all other industrial civil servants, the basic pay of Roads Service workers is unacceptably low but workers are able to make up a living income through a productivity-based bonus. Over time the outputs workers have to deliver – and which must be signed off by managers – to secure bonus have increased, leaving workers struggling to make bonus much of the time. The result is that workers pay in the sector is among the very lowest in the civil service.

Unite the union members working in the Roads Service voted overwhelmingly for strike action to end the current productivity-unit bonus system which is widely held to leave workers subject to management victimisation and to pressurise workers to perform tasks either inadequately or with undue attention to health and safety.

The current strike action is only the latest in a series of actions since Winter. Pickets were established at roads service depots in the west on Monday July 3rd, and will continue every day until Friday [July 7th].

Strike action will commence in eastern depots from Thursday [6th July] and will continue weekdays until Tuesday [11th July]. Management have been informed that a further week of strike action is planned by workers in the west over the week straddling the end of July and beginning of August.

Unite the union General Secretary Sharon Graham offered her support to the striking Roads Service workers:
