Public transport workers reject inadequate pay increase from Translink

Joint public transport trade union release

Trade unions to re-enter negotiations with employer to seek improved deal to resolve dispute

Public transport unions Unite, GMB and SIPTU have confirmed that their members have decisively voted to reject as inadequate a pay offer made by Translink management. The increase would have offered workers a five per cent increase plus a non-consolidated one-off payment of £1,500 for the 2023-2024 financial year.

Bus and rail workers voted with majorities of approximately 70 per cent to reject the pay offer. Following the ballot result, the unions will be holding fresh talks with Translink management to seek a resolution to the dispute.

The unions will also be engaging with their own memberships to agree the next steps in their efforts to improve pay and address the mounting recruitment and retention difficulties in the public transport services.

Fermanagh and Omagh council must stop scapegoating workers for waste collection failures caused by their own policies

Unite blasts management for attempting to exploit failures rooted in short staffing to pursue their long-term aim of ending ‘task and finish’

Unite the union which represents waste collection workers at Fermanagh and Omagh council has objected to a statement released by the council on its website which blamed failures of waste bin collections on “legacy work practices”.

This misrepresentation is an attempt to use a crisis caused by staffing shortages resulting from their own policies to advance their long-term objective of ending ‘task and finish’.

Task and finish is widely understood as being the most efficient way to organise waste bin collections as it encourages workers to commence bin runs early to avoid rush-hour delays and to proceed swiftly through the work. In other councils where task and finish has been replaced by a system of fixed hourly pay, the experience has been that bins are left uncollected at the end of the day.

Unite regional officer for the workforce Gareth Scott, said:“ Fermanagh and Omagh council is intent on using the failure to collect bins – caused by their own poor policies – to attack the longstanding practice of bin workers being paid under ‘task and finish’. The reality is that without task and finish the situation in waste collection would be far worse as the current system encourages workers to complete the collections in the most efficient manner.

Supreme Court unanimously upholds Unite’s right to strike

Unite reaction to historic court judgement

‘Historic’ judgement rejects employers’ injunction

In a ‘landmark ruling’, the Supreme Court has today found that Unite was fully legally entitled to undertake strike action in a dispute with construction company Jones Engineering.

The strike action, which involved hundreds of mechanical workers employed by Jones Engineering, shut down construction work on Intel and Pfizer projects last year, in a dispute relating to travel time payments. Jones Engineering were initially successful in an application for an injunction, which placed extensive procedural hoops on Unite before it was able to commence industrial action.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “This is a fantastic result and a historic win for all workers that will have far reaching consequences. This victory for Unite sends a powerful message to all employers that they can’t trample on a worker’s right to strike.  I am proud of our reps who faced enormous pressure by being named in the High and Supreme Court proceedings. This win vindicates them and underlines Unite’s commitment to do whatever it takes to defend our members.”

The Supreme Court unanimously found that Unite had fulfilled its obligations under the 1990 Industrial Relations Act and was entitled to the protections of the Act in carrying out industrial action.

Tom Fitzgerald, Unite regional coordinating officer said, “The Supreme Court was unanimous and emphatic in stating that Unite was entitled to the protections of the 1990 Industrial Relations Act and that the injunction should not have been granted. “Unite will now sit down with our legal team to understand the ramifications of the decision, but this now clearly ends any ambiguity around the right to strike once unions ensure they comply with their obligations under the Act.

Nexus workforce need urgent assurances, amidst scrapping for funding of counselling service for sexual abuse survivors

Taryn Trainor

Unite writes to Stormont health minister Robin Swann on jobs threat after end to funding for Nexus

Unite has written to Stormont health minister Robin Swann to seek an urgent meeting following the announcement of the removal of funding for Nexus the charitable agency providing support and counselling services to survivors of sexual abuse.

The union represents workers employed as counsellors and in administrative positions with the charity. As a result of the decision to end funding, there are major concerns for the future employment of those who provide this service. The decision leaves the charity entirely dependent on donations and charging for access to counselling services.

Addressing the threat, Unite regional equalities and women’s officer, Taryn Trainor said, “This announcement came without warning and was devastating for our members – some of whom have taken up these roles after experiencing sexual abuse themselves. These workers are now fearful for their future employment. There are obvious concerns that the service cannot be sustained by charitable donations or through income derived from charging survivors of sexual abuse for counselling.

“Nexus gets approximately 200 calls a month; that shows the scale of the problem in our society. What is the executive going to do to meet the needs of survivors of sexual abuse in the future?

“Unite is urgently seeking assurances from the health minister both for our members but also for the survivors of sexual abuse. This is a vital service and needs to be maintained.”
