Unite will escalate ABC dispute through the courts

Bin workers based at Armagh depot suspend strikes but union members stand ready to defend reps

ABC council senior management have presided over a ‘hostile environment’ for union reps and their behaviour is ‘shameful’

Unite members employed in waste collection at the Armagh depot have voted to suspend a seven-week strike taken in response to the sacking of their union rep.

Unite has vowed to continue to pursue justice for its sacked shop steward through all available avenues, including at employment tribunal where the council will have to justify its decision.

The strike action will be suspended from midnight [Thursday] tonight with employees returning to work tomorrow.

In a meeting notifying management of the decision to suspend, union officials demanded the council conduct an audit into its industrial practices, which they have agreed.

MEBSCA dispute: Tomorrow to see first in series of strikes

Pickets set for sites in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Kildare

Unite seeking reversal of austerity-era cut to ‘travel time’

Union warns of further strike action if MEBSCA does not make meaningful offer

September 5th: Unite, which represents plumbers, fitters, welders and apprentices on construction projects throughout Ireland, has said that a full-day work stoppage tomorrow (Friday 6 September) will involve official pickets being placed on selected large construction sites where members of the Mechanical Engineering & Building Services Contractors’ Association (MEBSCA) are carrying out works. The sites involved are in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Kildare, and pickets will be placed from 00.01 am to 11.59 pm. (see notes to editors).

Last month Unite mechanical members voted overwhelmingly for industrial action in pursuit of restoration of the first hour of ‘travel time’. Unite accepted an invitation to renewed talks on 26 August.  After these talks broke down, the union served notice of industrial action on relevant mechanical employers.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “While MEBSCA employers have seen their turnover skyrocket, workers are continuing to pay the price for a crisis that was not of their making.

“Unite members know that they have their union’s unstinting support as they fight to have this shameful cut reversed”.

In the absence of a meaningful offer from MEBSCA, further strike action will follow, with pickets being placed on additional sites.

Payment of the first hour of ‘travel time’ was originally cut as a so-called ‘temporary measure’ following the 2008 financial crash. This austerity-era cut was meant to be reviewed after a year, but over a decade later workers are still waiting.

Restoration of the first hour of ‘travel time’ would mean a significant increase in pay for mechanical construction workers at a time of ongoing cost-of-living pressures.

Unite regional officer James McCabe said: “Unless MEBSCA returns to the table and engages meaningfully with Unite regarding restoration of the first hour of ‘travel time’, industrial action will escalate. Resolution of this dispute is in the employers’ hands”.

Unite accuses MEBSCA of failing mechanical employers, as strikes set to begin

Union offers to support application for SEO incorporating ‘travel time’

Sectoral collective agreement best way to ensure level playing field

Trade union Unite, which represents plumbers, fitters, welders and apprentices, today (Thursday) said that the Mechanical Engineering & Building Services Contractors’ Association (MEBSCA) is failing its members by rejecting Unite’s offer to support an application for a new Sectoral Employment Order (SEO) incorporating ‘travel time’.

Mechanical workers on construction projects across Ireland are preparing to down tools on Friday 6 September in a dispute surrounding the union’s claim for reinstatement of the first hour of ‘travel time’, which was cut in the wake of the 2008 financial crash. ‘Travel time’ was originally introduced in the 1960s to compensate construction workers for the fact that they have no set place of work but may be required to travel to sites around the country, often at short notice.

Pointing out that the austerity era cut to ‘travel time’ was originally supposed to be subject to a review in late 2011 which never materialised, Unite said that it had made a series of attempts to resolve the matter through collective agreements, Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) hearings and SEO applications, but MEBSCA has consistently refused to engage on the issue.

MEBSCA dispute: Unite announces stoppages on September 6, as talks break down

Union warns employers must engage meaningfully or face further escalation

Workers seeking reversal of austerity-era cut to ‘travel time’

Trade union Unite, which represents plumbers, fitters, welders and apprentices on construction projects throughout Ireland, said today (Monday) that talks with the Mechanical Engineering & Building Services Contractors’ Association (MEBSCA) aimed at averting industrial action broke down this morning.

As a consequence, Unite has served notice of industrial action on MEBSCA employers.  The action will begin with a full day of stoppages on Friday 6 September, with pickets placed at sites around the country.

Earlier this month members voted overwhelmingly for industrial action in pursuit of restoration of the first hour of ‘travel time’. The decision to ballot for industrial action came after initial talks with MEBSCA broke down at the beginning of July.

Mechanical dispute: Unite to serve notice of industrial action this week

Series of one day stoppages to hit sites nationwide

Union seeking reversal of austerity-era cut to travel time

Trade union Unite, which represents plumbers, fitters and welders on construction projects throughout Ireland, said today (Sunday) that it will this week be serving notice of industrial action on employers who are members of the Mechanical Engineering & Building Services Contractors’ Association (MEBSCA).

Earlier this month members voted by over 90 per cent for industrial action in pursuit of restoration of the first hour of ‘travel time’. The decision to ballot for industrial action came after talks with MEBSCA broke down at the beginning of July.

Payment of the first hour of ‘travel time’ was originally cut as a so-called ‘temporary measure’ following the 2008 financial crash. Although this cut was meant to be reviewed after a year, that review never took place.

A reversal of this austerity era cut would mean an increase in gross pay of up to 12.7 per cent at a time of ongoing cost-of-living pressures.
