November 28th: Responding to the announcement today (Thursday 28 November) that pharmaceuticals manufacturer MSD plans to close its Swords plant by the end of 2017 with the loss of 570 jobs, Unite – which represents over 360 workers in the facility – today expressed shock at the news and pledged to do everything in its power to help find a buyer for the facility and preserve some or all of the highly-skilled jobs.
Commenting, Unite official Tom Fitzgerald said:
“Today’s news, a month before Christmas, will come as a huge shock to the workers, their families and the wider community in North Dublin.
“The company has stated that it intends to work with IDA Ireland to find a buyer for the plant in order to minimise job losses, and Unite will proactively work with management and the IDA in such efforts. In that regard, Unite is commencing immediate engagement with management.
Willie Quigley, the Unite official representing craft workers in the plant, said:
“The time frame announced today provides some space to find a purchaser to take over this fine facility, and that will be the focus of Unite’s efforts”.
