March 31st: Unite Regional Secretary Jimmy Kelly today urged members of Unite as well as the general public to show solidarity with workers at Dunnes Stores in advance of their one-day strike on Thursday April 2nd.
“The cause of Dunnes Stores workers is the cause of workers throughout Ireland. Management has consistently refused to sit down with the workers and their trade union, Mandate, to enter meaningful discussions about four very simple issues:
- The implementation of banded hour contracts which would give workers security of hours and earnings.
- Fair pay for all workers in Dunnes Stores.
- A review of Dunnes’ excessive use of temporary contracts of employment.
- Individual and collective representational rights for Dunnes workers.
“This strike is important to all of us who believe that workers should be respected.
“Unite fully supports the workers and their trade union. I will not be crossing any Dunnes Stores picket line, and Unite is urging all our members and the wider public to show solidarity with Dunnes Stores workers on Thursday”, Jimmy Kelly concluded.
