Conference of migrant Health Care Assistants hears calls for family reunification

Unite pledges support to HCA campaign for respect

October 21st: The first national conference of migrant health care assistants (HCAs) took place in Unite’s Dublin office over the weekend. The conference, which was organised by Migrant Nurses Ireland (MNI), heard from migrant HCAs who are unable to bring their families to live with them due to their low salary levels mandated by government work permit regulations, which are below the family reunification earnings thresholds.

During Saturday’s conference, MNI formerly established a dedicated section for Health Care Assistants.

Speaking during the event, MNI national convenor Varghese Joy said: “The key issue discussed today was the fact that HCAs earn below the threshold which would enable them to bring their families to live with them. Our members are demanding family re-unification with immediate effect.”

MEBSCA dispute: pickets set for Pfizer site tomorrow

Employers must come to table or risk prolonging dispute

Unite members working for employers who are members of the Mechanical Engineering & Building Services Contractors’ Association (MEBSCA) are set to down tools tomorrow as they continue fighting to secure the reversal of the austerity-era cut to ‘travel time’.

Pickets will be mounted from 0.01 am to 11.59 pm tomorrow (Monday 14 October) outside the Pfizer project in Grangecastle (Clondalkin), where MEBSCA employers are carrying out works.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “MEBSCA employers can easily afford to reverse the shameful austerity-era cut to ‘travel time’. Our members will continue to receive their union’s unstinting support in this fight”.

In August Unite mechanical members voted overwhelmingly for industrial action in pursuit of restoration of the first hour of ‘travel time’, which was cut in the wake of the 2008 financial crash. To date MEBSCA and its parent organisation, the Construction Industry Federation (CIF), have refused to engage meaningfully with the workers’ demands.

Unite regional officer James McCabe said: “MEBSCA employers know what they have to do to avoid further prolonging this dispute: come to the table and make our members a meaningful offer”.

Campaign to restore Winter fuel payment for all pensioners launched on steps to Stormont

At today’s National Pensioners Convention rally at Stormont, speaker after speaker assailed both the Labour government for ending the winter fuel payment and the Stormont executive for meekly enforcing the policy in Northern Ireland.

Unite’s speakers committed the union to campaign to reverse the policy and highlighted the cruel impact it will have on pensioners in Northern Ireland, the UK region with the highest rates of fuel poverty.

General secretary of Unite Sharon Graham was central to the successful vote against the policy taken at Labour party conference. She said, “It’s time to change course. To reverse these cuts before it is too late. Before our NHS is overrun with sick older people or pensioners die from the cold. This austerity cut to winter fuel needs to be scrapped.

“Friends I make no apology for calling Labour to account. They are simply wrong on this issue. We cannot put our fingers in our ears or walk on the other side of the road. We must stand up and be counted.”

MEBSCA dispute: Pickets set for Intel site tomorrow as dispute escalates

Workers fight for travel time restoration against backdrop of falling living standards

Unite members working as plumbers, fitters, welders and apprentices are set to down tools tomorrow as they continue action to secure the reversal of the austerity-era cut to ‘travel time’.

Pickets will be mounted from 0.01 am to 11.59 pm tomorrow (Monday 7 October) outside the flagship Intel project in Co Kildare, where several MEBSCA employers are carrying out works.

In August Unite mechanical members voted overwhelmingly for industrial action in pursuit of restoration of the first hour of ‘travel time’, which was cut in the wake of the 2008 financial crash. Unite served notice of industrial action on MEBSCA members after talks with the group and its parent organisation, the Construction Industry Federation (CIF), broke down as a result of the employers’ refusal to engage.

A recent survey of Unite members working for MEBSCA employers found that over 80% have seen their living standards fall over the past five years.

Unite to support National Pensioners Convention rally at Stormont demanding restoration of Winter Fuel payment

Low-income retired workers in Northern Ireland will be disproportionately impacted by move limiting payment to those receiving pension credit

When: 10.30am Monday 7th October 2024 with the rally from 11am-1pm

Where: Assembling at Stormont Gates

What: Feeder parade to NPC rally at Stormont demanding restoration of Winter Fuel Payment in Northern Ireland

Media are invited to attend for video, photo and interviews.

Unite the union has encouraged attendance at a rally called by the National Pensioners’ Convention at Stormont for restoration of the Winter Fuel payment.

The union is organising a feeder march ahead of the rally which will gather at 10.30am at the main entrance Gate to the Stormont Estate. Attendees will then process up the road to join the NPC rally which will be held at the steps of Stormont at 11am.

Unite the union succeeded in passing a motion at the recent Labour party conference calling for the government to reverse its plans to end the universal winter fuel payment. The policy to limit payments to those in receipt of pension credit will have greatest impact on those formerly employed in low wage jobs who have small pensions just sufficient to make them ineligible for the benefit.

Sharon Graham, the general secretary of Unite said: “The government’s winter fuel policy needs to be reversed. Picking the pockets of pensioners is not a tough choice – it is a mistake.

“There is no reason why we have to choose between paying workers and keeping pensioners warm. Unite’s retired members are furious and will be making their voice heard.”

Unite regional secretary Susan Fitzgerald said, “This is an entirely unnecessary attack on retired workers by the new Labour government. The Stormont Executive shouldn’t just meekly follow suit and enforce this rotten policy here. No reasonable person would think that this Dickensian attack is acceptable. Unite stands full-square behind our retired members who are demanding restoration of this vital payment.”
