Unite supporting Young People’s Assembly, Saturday November 9th

Young People Assembly 2Solidarity required in response to barrage of cuts, says young union activist

Unite is one of the sponsors of the Young People’s Assembly due to be held in Liberty Hall on Saturday (November 9th).  The Assembly is being hosted by the SIPTU-supported Young Workers’ Network and organised by the youth campaign group ‘We’re Not Leaving’.

Commenting, Regional Secretary Jimmy Kelly said:  “Budget 2014, including the decision to again cut young people’s Jobseeker’s Allowance, was just the most recent attack on Ireland’s youth.    Unite welcomes the fact that young people are organising and campaigning not only on their own behalf, but on behalf of all those – young and old – who are being targeted by the politics of austerity.  That is why we are delighted to support the Young People’s Assembly on Saturday”.

Paul Dillon, Vice Chair of the Unite Youth Committee, will be facilitating one of the workshops at the event.  Paul noted:  The constant barrage of Government cuts require a response which emphasises solidarity. It is not enough to simply oppose one set of cuts, giving the impression that cuts to others are okay. This Assembly has the full support of Unite Youth, as it is brings young people together to campaign for a future where the right of citizens come first”.
